|Our next walks from the Summer Programme:
Saturday 27th May 2017
Our next walks from the summer programme will be on a full day, finishing at Ravenglass on Saturday 27th May 2017.
The ‘A’ walk will be led by John Mountford and starts on the A595 just outside Broad Oak, walking in an easterly direction through fields and lanes to Barnscar (prehistoric cairnfield), then following Black Beck to the west of Birkby Fell and Devoke Water, (largest tarn in the Lake District). From Devoke Water we ascend Water Crag (1001 ft) and then cross to Brantrake Crag, descending to Brant Rake Farm. We head west along the Esk Trail skirting Muncaster Fell to ascend to Muncaster Tarn then descending via Fell Lane to cross the A595 into the grounds of Muncaster Castle and following paths to the River Esk estuary and the quaint Main Street of Ravenglass. 11½ miles with an accumulative ascent of 1973 ft. Highest point is 1001 ft.
The ‘B’ walk will be led by Ian Meek and starts on the A595 at Eskdale Golf Club Drive, walking east through Moss Plantation then crossing the golf course and on to High Eskholme, following a track to the farm at Muncaster Head, before ascending to Rabbit How, Silver Crag and Muncaster Fell, then descending to Muncaster Tarn and the A595 for a short roadwalk to Muncaster Castle and the ground’s pavilion with a stop for ice cream. We then take the path through the woods to the Roman Bath House and into Ravenglass. Approx 8 miles with an accumulative ascent of 1,240 feet
The ’C’ walk will be led by Linda Mountford and starts at the Ratty Arms, following the footpath to cross the railway line via a footbridge to join a minor road. Turning right we follow the road then through woods to the Roman Bath House. Here we pick up the Esk Trail, walking through woodland and passing Decoy Pond to Muncaster Castle where we cross the A595 to continue along the Esk Trail through woods beside the Eskdale Railway. The path rises to enjoy views across the estuary and fells. We then cross the A595, walking through fields to re-join the minor road. The path to the estuary takes us under the railway bridge, and back into Ravenglass Main Street. 5 miles, with an accumulative ascent of 542 ft; the highest point being 313 ft and one stile.
