Our next walks from the Winter Programme 2014/15:

Saturday 24th January 2015

KESWICK

FULL DAY

Our first walks from the winter programme will be on a full day, finishing at Keswick on Saturday 24th January 2015

The ‘A’ walk will be led by Graham Dyson and will start from Ashness Bridge, following Barrow Beck then Ashness Gill to the summit of High Seat (608m). We then head north to Bleaberry Fell (590m) and on to Walla Crag (379m). From there we descend via Rakefoot and Castlerigg into Keswick.  7 miles with an ascent of 2,170 feet and 3 Wainwrights.

The 'B' walk will be led by Alan Whittaker and is a circular walk from Keswick along the old railway line then on a steady climb to the Stone Circle at Castlerigg, continuing on tarmac then fields to the side of Walla Crag and through Great Wood before dropping down to Derwentwater Lake and along the side of the Lake back to Keswick.  The walk is on shale paths, some tarmac and fields. 8 miles and 400 feet of ascent.

The 'C' walk will be led by Linda Mountford and starts in Threlkeld Village at the foot of Blencathra, walking through the village and joining the disused railway line to Keswick. The railway line crosses the River Greta 9 times, and this river was an important source of power for the mills. We will pass through Burns & Brundholme Woods which provided charcoal for the copper & iron smelting in the 18th Century.  There are toilets in the Village Hall as you walk through Threlkeld.  Approx. 4 miles and flat with no stiles, finishing in Keswick town centre.

Non-walkers are always welcome to book on the coach.   Keswick is a very popular and scenic market town  - Wordsworth described it as “the loveliest spot that man ever found.
