Our next walks from the Winter Programme:

Saturday 4th March 2017

Our next walks from the winter programme will be on a full day, finishing at Braithwaite on Saturday 4th March 2017.
The ‘A’ walk will be led by John Mountford and starts from Braithwaite walking along Whinlatter Road before turning left onto the mining lane to follow the Coledale Valley to the disused buildings of Force Crag mine. We cross the stepping stones at Coledale Beck to ascend to the col between Grasmoor and Crag Hill to the trig pillar at 2753 ft which offers fantastic views. Leaving the Crag we follow the rocky ridge of the ‘Scar’ to Sail to descend in an easterly direction to Stile End, and finally ascend Barrow offering once again good views of the lakes. Once at Barrow the descent is via Braithwaite lodge and back into Braithwaite. 9 miles with an accumulative ascent of 3058 ft.
The ‘B’ walk will be led by Sylvia Dyson and is a circular from Braithwaite, heading southwest to High Coledale with Barrow Gill on our left, to circumnavigate Barrow via Barrow Door and Stonycroft Gill.  On reaching the Newlands Road we head East to Stair, Skelgill and Derwent Bay. A short walk along the Cumbria Way to Derwent Bank where we take to the road via Ullock to Little Braithwaite.  We then cross fields and the campsite back into Braithwaite. 7 miles and 1550ft of ascent.
The ’C’ walk will be led by Linda Mountford and starts alongside the A591 for a short way to Thrushwood, where we cross fields towards Ormathwaite bearing North to the small hamlet of Applethwaite which sits at the base of Skiddaw. Continuing along a quiet lane to Millbeck Farm and then on to Dancing Gate. Along this part of the walk there are lovely views across the hills, Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwent Water. We then walk back alongside the A591 for a short way before crossing the road to a track leading to High Stock Bridge, crossing the River Derwent and following the river, before branching off to cross fields to Bog House, and continue our walk through fields to Braithwaite. 5 miles, 2 stiles with an accumulative ascent of 353 ft.
